Byron Shire Calls for Compensation Fund from Big Polluters

Byron Shire Council is calling on the federal government to make big polluters pay for climate damage. The motion will push to establish a National Climate Compensation Fund, funded by a levy on major coal, oil and gas companies.

The Byron council says communities are being left to cover the rising costs of climate-fuelled disasters, with local governments struggling to keep up with recovery and rebuilding efforts.
